The venerable Matson Mahimahi is due to arrive in Oakland Tuesday afternoon. The 25 year-old container ship inaugurated Matson’s Guam service in 1996, but now makes a three-week loop between California and Hawaii.
At 860 feet long with a top speed of 23 knots, the Mahimahi is the largest and fastest vessel in Matson’s fleet. The Mahimahi carries more than 2,800 20-feet containers.
After stopping in Los Angeles Friday, the Mahimahi will begin the four-day voyage to Honolulu. |

Arriving in Oakland Friday from Seattle, the Rotterdam Express will depart Oakland the same day for a 26-day voyage that will take the ship through the Panama Canal, up the East Coast, and across the Atlantic to Rotterdam, the world’s busiest port.
The Rotterdam Express is one of seven vessels in Hapag-Lloyds Antwerpen class of container ships. Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2000, the ships are 286 meters long, and can carry 4,843 20-feet containers. They have a top speed of 24 knots.
It will take the Rotterdam Express three days to cross the North Atlantic from Halifax to Thamesport on the United Kingdom’s Isle of Grain. |

The Rialto Bridge, a container ship operated by K-Line, is scheduled to arrive in Oakland Tuesday night following a one-day journey from Los Angeles. With a crew of 20, the 12-year old ship is making a loop between West Coast ports and ports in Asia. She is scheduled to sail to Japan on Wednesday.
Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding in South Korea, and registered in Hamburg, the ship first sailed as the Sealand Mistral before becoming the Safmarine Kimley, and finally the Rialto Bridge.
To read more about life on the Rialto Bridge read the blog of a couple who sailed on her as tourists from Singapore to Barcelona in 2006. |
