Online marketplaces run the gamut -- from the global Amazon to the local Oakland Unwrapped, there's something for every taste and sensibility. This Friday, a new Oakland-based store is going to join the mix: Mosaic.
Founded by fashion buyer Chioma Amegashie, Mosaic promises us "global chic." Liberian-born Chioma worked as a buyer with retailers like Marshall Field's, Esprit de Corp., and Mervyn's before starting Mosaic. Her new venture features footwear, clothes, jewelry, accessories, and home accents from across the world. Here are some examples of what you'll see on the site - beautiful Coclico footwear made of luxurious leathers, handcrafted in Spain. SURevolution organic leaf jewelry made by artisans from Colombia.
When you first visit the site, you might think of Cost Plus, only because it also carries an array of items from the world's bazaars, but the comparisons end as soon you look at the jewelry. Mosaic is upscale and fashionable.
"It's about the global lifestyle," says Chioma. "It's for people who are traveled and lifestyle-driven." Prices range from $20 to $500, depending on the category.

Mosaic launches with a party this Friday, February 22, at the Esteban Sabar gallery, where you can shop over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Part of the proceeds will go to the Tiger Lily Foundation and the African Women's Cancer Awareness Association.
