| You can almost hear that school bell ringing as summer draws to a
close. Feel like you and your kids need just one or two more breaks
before you start packing lunches and signing permission slips? While
most Oakland students return to school Monday, August 25, there is
still time to enjoy a few field trips Oakland style. Turn off the
Summer Olympics, put down that back-to-school shopping list, and try a
horse show, an outdoor musical, a dance recital, or a movie viewed from
the cool waters of your local pool. |

Things to View
A’s - Kids Summer Games
If you love your Oakland A’s, why not pack the kids and head over to the Coliseum. This summer, the A’s are offering cheap kids’ tickets (and with the way they're performing, they should be offering the same prices to adults.) A few select games remain. For each paying adult, you can purchase up to four $5 kids’ tickets in the Field Level Outfield.
Enjoy a summer evening or daytime game against the Minnesota Twins the last August weekend.
Thursday and Friday Aug 28 and 29, 7:05 (bobblehead give-away Friday night to first 15000 fans)
Sunday, Aug 31, 1:05 (back-to-school backpack to first 7500 kids)
Visit the Oakland A’s website for more details. (oakland.athletics.mlb.com)

SEUSSICAL! at Woodminster
If your family has missed the Woodminster theater shows this summer, there’s still time to enjoy the singing folly of “Suessical” the musical at this delightful outdoor amphitheater in Joaquin Miller Park. Buy an adult ticket and your kids 16 and under come in for free (limit two) August 15-17.
Free tickets are only issued the evening of the performance. If you have already purchased your adult ticket, your kids might need to sit apart from you (hey, they – and you – might enjoy that!). However, if you want your family all together, buy your adult ticket the night of the performance.
Performances: August 14, 15, 16, 17. All performances at 8 p.m.

Ronn Guidi Ballet
You don’t need to wait until December to enjoy the leaps and pas de deuxs of Oakland’s favorite ballet instructor’s troupe. See what his students have been up to the summer when The Ronn Guidi Foundation presents its Choreographers' Showcase.
Saturday, August 16; 7 p.m.
Holy Names University, Regents' Theatre 3500 Mountain Boulevard
Buy your reserved $18 tickets in advance by emailing info@rgpa.org or calling 530-7516.
Things to do
Take a Hike
Don’t let that great East Bay sunshine vanish before you enjoy some more outdoor fun. Gather up your adventurous crew and take them on a hike. The Chabot Space and Science Center is leading Sunday family hikes throughout August. There’s still one more to catch.
August 24; 9AM
“Redwoods to Cosmos” – 9 – 11AM; For families with kids 8 and up.
“Earth and Sky Unite” – 1:30 – 2:30PM; For families with kids 5 and up.
Skilled naturalists will lead your charges along the beautiful Redwood trails. View our world’s ecosystem in action and spot gentle wildlife in their natural habitats. Most walks take hikers along the shady paths of the Redwood Regional Park just beyond the Chabot Space and Science Center.
For more information call 336-7373, or visit chabotspace.org
Row the Bay
If your teenager seeks adventure and something a little more unusual, sign the kid up for a dusky evening kayaking journey. The Jack London Aquatic Center will lead rowers 16 years and up on outings around Coast Guard Island. These treks begin at day’s end and run the first and third Fridays of the month.
Through September 8; 5 – 7 PM
Fee is $20
For more information, call 208-6060 or visit their website.
