Volunteering over Thanksgiving

You may or may not be into the whole turkey scene, but if you’re into volunteering, consider helping out at the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner hosted through the City of Oakland’s hunger programs. Contact volunteer coordinator Chyrill Quamina at (510) 238-7756 for opportunities to help out this holiday season.

Plaid Friday

Plaid Friday isn’t about being preachy or doing the right thing. It’s about having fun. It’s about dressing up in plaid and going shopping. Two excellent local galleries, Blankspace and Compound Gallery, came up with the idea of an event that gets shoppers to local indie businesses on the country’s busiest shopping day – the day often referred to as Black Friday.  More than 60 cafes, stores, boutiques and all kinds of retailers across Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville have signed up to be a part of the Plaid party. Don’t miss Holidayland at Blankspace and Compound galleries.

So, if you’re planning to go shopping, wear plaid and head out across the east bay. The list of participating stores is here. You might surprise yourself with how much fun you have by skipping the mall.
